introduction
the main function of this lab is to probe the specific surface area and determine the adsorption/desorption isotherms of solid materials. the lab has instruments including (1) pctpro high-temperature and high-pressure gas adsorption analyzer (setaram), (2) autosorb-iq gas adsorption analyzer (quantachrome), and (3) ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (egme) adsorption apparatus.
the pctpro can determine the adsorption/desorption isotherms of solid materials at different temperatures (t) and pressures (p). the adsorbates include ch4, co2, or mixed gas. the measure ranges of pressure and temperature are 0~200 bar and 0~500 °c, respectively. sample with mass ranged from mg to kg can be measured. the adsorption/desorption isotherms can be accomplished under constant p, △p, and f(△p). this instrument is mainly employed in studies of shale gas, methane gas, and co2 sequestration. the autosorb-iq is mainly used for nitrogen (n2) adsorption to measure the adsorption/desorption isotherms, specific surface area, average pore diameter, pore volume, pore size distribution of solid materials. measurement limit: specific surface area, lower limit 0.0005 m2/g, no upper limit; pore size range, 0.35~500 nm; p/po range, <1*10-7~0.99. the egme adsorption apparatus is chiefly used to determine the total surface area of solid materials. the analytical error is less than 5%. internal surface area of solid materials can be measured with assistance of external surface area measured by n2 adsorption.
